Shattering Stereotypes

In February 2024 Tacoma Opera presents André Previn’s operatic adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ iconic play, A Streetcar Named Desire. This explosive, passionate and heartrending opera delves into the complexities of stereotypes, psychology, and societal expectations that create deep-rooted prejudices against those who dare to challenge societal norms.

The opera explores the unraveling of fading Southern belle Blanche DuBois who, wounded by romantic abuses, loss, and dangerous mistakes, begins a cruel and sadistic dance with her sister Stella’s husband Stanley. Previn’s haunting modern score masterfully weaves jazz, blues, and traditional opera elements as the audience enters Blanche’s world of vulnerability and her fragile mental state, exacerbated by the harsh reality of her circumstances.

We are excited to bring A Streetcar Named Desire to the Federal Way Performing Arts and Event Center (PAEC) on February 9th at 7PM, and February 10th and 11th at 2PM. On the night of February 9th only, the PAEC’s elegant glass lobby provides the perfect backdrop for our opening night pre-show Mardi Gras party complete with jazz music, cocktails, and Hor’deuvres. All proceeds from the preshow ticketed event benefit Catherine Place, a nonprofit that provides help and resources to benefit women in crisis.

The Federal Way PAEC is a mere 12 minutes from Tacoma’s theaters, and will offer an elevated opera experience, including the convenience of ample free parking.

Sung in English with Supertitles.
