About Arts 4 Youth

Connecting Students and Educators to the Performing Arts

Mission Statement:

To offer accessible Arts Education to all K-12 students; with an emphasis on providing equitable live performances to marginalized communities who may typically lack opportunities to experience the arts.  We accomplish this by keeping our costs low, our booking process simple. Additionally, we offer resources to educators that allow them to better integrate arts education into their classroom; before, during, and after in-person performances.

About the Program:

Arts 4 Youth offers a series of fully-produced matinées for school groups that align with and support Common Core Standards.. Research shows that arts education strengthens both the intellectual, and emotional development of K-12 students; reminding us of the importance and need to have this subject featured more prominently in classrooms. We provide study guides, lesson plans, and other resources to accompany each performance.  We know that it can be difficult to justify a field trip, particularly if it doesn’t feel relevant to your curriculum.  This is why we do our best to provide these extra resources, so educators can make sure that the field trip provides you with learning that expands beyond a one-day-trip.  Ideally, making it easier to have more conversations and lessons about the arts in your classroom and perhaps integrating these lessons with other subject areas!

All matinées last one hour (give or take) and tickets cost just $5.00 (maximum).  Through the generosity of the Arts Foundation Federal Way, we offer discounts and bus grants to students and schools that qualify. We strongly believe in ensuring access to the performing arts and providing inspiring opportunities for everyone. See you at the show!

History of A4Y:

The Arts 4 Youth program was launched during the 2017-2018 school year, as a partnership between the Federal Way Performing Arts and Event Center, and the Arts Foundation Federal Way.  With generous funding from the Arts Foundation, the program has been able to provide financial support to qualifying schools/students, while also assisting with bus grants as needed.  The program has seen incredible success; over 8,000 students have attended one or more of our performances. In fact, 100 percent of Federal Way Schools have participated in our program.  While our focus has been on partnering with Federal Way Public Schools, this program is open to all/any schools who are close enough to attend.  We’ve served public school students from Tacoma, Kent, Auburn, Highline, Puyallup- to name a few; while also serving numerous private schools and home-schooled students!  In fact, 23 schools attended performances all three years of the program!

Arts 4 Youth ran two full seasons (17-18, and 18-19) and a mostly complete season in 2019-20, until the pandemic forced the final shows of that season to be canceled.  During the 2021-22 school year, we were able to provide free resources and live streaming shows to local schools to help keep the program alive.  Sadly, as the pandemic forged on, we weren’t able to continue the program for the last couple years.  Now 2023-24, we are finally back with our first in person season in a few years!   In some ways, it’s like starting over.  We need the support of local districts, administrators, and educators to keep this program alive. As things are getting back to normal, we want to continue to grow this program into something bigger and better than ever.
